Historically, state law made all of IOLERO’s audits confidential, and entirely prohibited release of these reports to the public. All we could do was release generalized summaries in our annual reports, which we still do today for most of our cases.
Recently, through Senate Bills 1421 and 16, the State Legislature created an exception to this law for a SMALL set of cases, such as those auditing deputy-involved shootings and infliction of great bodily injury. (Penal Code section 832.7(b)(1)(A)). Some portions of these reports involving other issues, or the identity of victims and complainants, still remain confidential. At IOLERO, we are grateful that the state has finally allowed us to make reports like these public, and will be releasing reports like these in future.
The Sonoma County Sheriff does the same at this page, where you can find even more detail about cases, like body worn camera video. Where we can, we have included with our audit report links, below, links to the Sheriff’s Office public-facing materials on the same cases.
