Juvenile Justice Realignment Subcommittee
In 2021 Senate Bill 823 realigned to Counties youth who were formerly committed to the California Department of Corrections Division of Juvenile Justice. The law also requires the formation of a subcommittee of the Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council to develop a plan describing the facilities, programs, placements, services, supervision and reentry strategies that are needed to provide appropriate rehabilitation and supervision services for the realigned juvenile justice population.
The Juvenile Justice Realignment Subcommittee includes the Chief Probation Officer as chair, and one representative each from the District Attorney’s office, the Public Defender’s office, the department of social services (in Sonoma County the Human Services Department), the department of mental health (in Sonoma County the Behavioral Health Division of the Department of Health Services), the county office of education or a school district, and a representative from the Court. The subcommittee also includes no fewer than three community members defined as individuals who have experience providing community-based youth services, youth justice advocates with expertise and knowledge of the juvenile justice system, or have been directly involved in the juvenile justice system.
The JJRS is governed by the Brown Act. The JJRS Charter and JJCC Bylaws are available for download.
