March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election: Voting for President

Sonoma County Voting

Note: Your options depend on which party you're registered with (if any). If you're not sure, you can look up your registration using the California Secretary of State's My Voter Status tool, or contact our office.

➤ If you are registered with a qualified political party (American Independent Party, Democratic Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party, Peace and Freedom Party, or Republican Party)...

Your primary election ballot will contain candidates who are running for your party’s presidential nomination, as well as other contests and measures you are eligible to vote on based on your residential address.

➤ If you are NOT registered with a qualified political party (i.e., are “unaffiliated” or "No Party Preference" or registered with an unqualified political party)...

You may be able to participate in a qualified political party's presidential primary if that party allows it. Three qualified political parties are allowing unaffiliated voters to "cross over" and participate in their party's 2024 presidential primary: American Independent Party, Democratic Party, and Libertarian Party. The Sonoma County Registrar of Voters Office mailed postcards to unaffiliated voters in late November of last year (2023) asking which parties' presidential primary ballot they would like to receive (if any).

  • ❖ If you want to vote in the American Independent, Democratic, or Libertarian presidential primary...

Just fill out the card, sign it, and mail it back. Alternatively, you can use the California Secretary of State's No Party Preference Cross-Over Ballot Notice and Application (en español) (PDF), fill it out, sign it, and return it to our office by email (rov-absentee@sonoma-county.org -- you must include a picture or scan of the completed form as an attachment), fax (707-565-6843), or regular mail (Sonoma County ROV, PO Box 11485, Santa Rosa, CA 95406).

  • ❖ If you want to vote in the Green, Peace and Freedom, or Republican presidential primary...

You will need to re-register with that party. You can register online using the California Secretary of State's California Online Voter Registration, or you can pick up a paper registration form at any post office or public library. You can also call our office and request to be mailed a paper registration form.

  • ❖ If you aren't interested in voting in any party's presidential primary...

You don't have to do anything. You will receive a "nonpartisan" ballot that does not include any presidential contest.

Please note that the above information only applies to the presidential contest. Regardless of your party registration, your ballot will also include voter-nominated and nonpartisan contests, propositions and measures, etc., which are appropriate for the districts in which you reside.

The video below summarizes the options available to unaffiliated voters who wish to vote for president in the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election.
